GRASSRIVERS IN REAL LIFE
Rockstar calls Grassrivers "the untamable jewel of Leonida's crown" and opens with a warning: "You never know what lies beneath the surface of this primordial expanse. The gators may be the most famous attraction, but there are far deadlier predators and weirder discoveries among the mangroves."
Change "Grassrivers" to "the Everglades" and most of that paragraph would work on a Florida tourism poster. The name itself sounds like a nod to the "River of Grass," the phrase Marjory Stoneman Douglas made famous in 1947. That is our reading; Rockstar has not explained the name.
How to read these pairs: the first image is an official GTA VI screenshot; the second is the real Everglades. A pair shows a shared idea, not a claim that Rockstar copied a specific place.
Airboats and alligators
Three of Rockstar's four Grassrivers screenshots feature airboats. One is a top-down shot of "two people in an airboat surrounded by alligators," with one of them aiming a gun at the closest gator.

In the real Everglades, the airboat is how most visitors meet the wetlands. Three airboat operators on the Tamiami Trail run tours on park land, and according to a National Park Service planning document, the operators estimate they take more than 300,000 passengers into the park each year. Unlike Rockstar's version, the tours do not come armed.
The gators are real too. Everglades National Park is one of the few places where alligators and crocodiles live side by side, and the park covers 1.5 million acres. It was established in 1947, the same year Douglas published The Everglades: River of Grass.

"Among the mangroves"
Rockstar says the weirder discoveries are "among the mangroves," and one screenshot shows a police chase tearing through a swamp full of alligators, with a helicopter overhead and an airboat in the background.

Everglades National Park has the largest contiguous stand of protected mangroves in the Western Hemisphere, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Red, black and white mangroves line its coast, which is exactly the kind of maze a getaway driver would pick.
"Far deadlier predators"
Rockstar does not say which predators it means, so anything here is interpretation. The most famous real candidate is the Burmese python, an invasive snake. U.S. Geological Survey road surveys between 2003 and 2011 recorded raccoon sightings down 99.3%, opossums down 98.9% and bobcats down 87.5%, declines that coincided with the python's spread. One of Rockstar's screenshots also shows a dead wildcat next to the gator; fans link it to Florida's panthers or bobcats, but that is a fan reading.
Towns on the water
The fourth screenshot is different: "a speed boat drives toward buildings on piers overlooking the water. In the distance is the Vice City skyline."

The closest real-world comparison is Everglades City, a small fishing town at the edge of the park that also has a documented smuggling past. On July 7, 1983, more than 200 federal agents arrived in the town and arrested 23 people, as part of a two-year investigation that UPI reported had led to 149 arrests and the seizure of $179 million worth of marijuana. Whether Rockstar's pier town is modelled on Everglades City is a fan theory.
Fans have also spotted a water tower in that shot whose partly hidden lettering appears to begin "WAT". Rockstar's Ultimate Edition copy mentions a place called Watson Bay, so some players link the two. That is an unconfirmed reading of a partly hidden sign.
What is confirmed, and what is not
Confirmed by Rockstar: the name Grassrivers, the wetlands, gators, mangroves, airboats and the four scenes described above. Not confirmed: which real places inspired them, what the "deadlier predators" are, and where Watson Bay sits.
