For one week in August, a 27-minute video game preview was the most-viewed film on Netflix. Netflix announced it with a headline about GTA VI soaring to No. 1. What the announcement did not dwell on: the preview was watched for less than a third as many hours as the film it beat.
Both facts are true, and the gap between them is the most interesting thing about the first Netflix premiere of a game reveal. Netflix publishes the raw numbers behind its Top 10 lists as downloadable files, global and country by country. We went through them for every week An Extended Look appeared. The video's run was shorter, more European and more fragile than the "No. 1 worldwide" coverage suggested, and one figure in Netflix's own announcement does not match Netflix's own data.
What Netflix actually reported
Rockstar's page for Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look dates it August 27, 2026, describes it as "captured entirely from in-game footage on the PlayStation 5," and links to both Netflix and YouTube. The YouTube upload runs 26 minutes 48 seconds.
Netflix's Top 10 article for the week of August 24 says the video "topped the English film list with 31.1M views and hit No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries tracked globally."
The global data file has the full line for that week, which Netflix files under the date the week ended, August 30:
- Rank: 1 in Films (English)
- Hours viewed: 14,000,000
- Runtime used: 0.45 hours, or 27 minutes
Divide 14.0 million hours by 0.45 hours and you get 31.1 million. A "view" here is total hours watched divided by runtime, not a count of separate people. That arithmetic explains almost everything that follows.
No. 1 by views, a distant second by hours
The film in second place that week was The Whisper Man, a thriller in its first week on the service. It logged 44.1 million hours, more than three times GTA VI's 14.0 million. Its runtime in the file is 1.9 hours, so those hours convert to 23.2 million views.
Netflix ranks its lists by views. A short title needs far fewer hours to collect the same number of views, and GTA VI was by some distance the shortest film anywhere in that week's English film list. On hours, it would still have finished second in its category. Third place, The Last House, had 10.9 million hours.
None of this makes the result fake. Netflix chose views as its ranking metric for every title, and GTA VI won under the same rules as everything else. It does mean that "GTA VI beat every movie on Netflix" and "people spent more time on GTA VI than on Netflix's films" are different claims, and only the first is supported.
How big is 31.1 million?
The views data in the global file goes back to the week ending June 18, 2023. Among English-language films in their first week on the Top 10 in 2026, GTA VI's 31.1 million ranks fifth:
- The Rip: 41.6 million (week ending January 18)
- War Machine: 39.3 million (week ending March 8)
- Apex: 38.2 million (week ending April 26)
- Thrash: 37.7 million (week ending April 12)
- Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look: 31.1 million (week ending August 30)
There is a caveat in GTA VI's favor. Netflix weeks run Monday to Sunday, and the video premiered on a Thursday, so 31.1 million covers four days, not seven. There is also one against it. The others are feature films, and at 0.45 hours GTA VI needed only a fraction of their watch time to post a comparable number. The highest weekly figure for any English film in the file is Carry-On's 55.1 million, in the week ending December 22, 2024.
The second week: down 86 percent
The same file shows what happened next. In the week ending September 6, An Extended Look fell to fourth place with 4.4 million views and 2.0 million hours. That is a drop of about 86 percent in views. Over the same two weeks The Whisper Man rose from 23.2 million to 33.4 million and took first place.
By the week ending September 13, GTA VI was gone from the English film Top 10. Its entire Netflix chart life is two weeks and 35.5 million views.
That curve makes sense for what the video is. A thriller grows by word of mouth. A game reveal is an event: the people who want it watch it on the first night, and the rest of the audience has other places to see it. On September 6 the free version was nine days old on YouTube.
Country by country: 58 No. 1s, not 87
Netflix also publishes a country-level file with the weekly Top 10 films and series for each of the 93 countries it tracks. For the week ending August 30, it lists An Extended Look in the films Top 10 of all 93. The ranks break down like this:
- No. 1: 58 countries
- No. 2: 27 countries
- No. 3: 3 countries (Argentina, Nigeria, Uruguay)
- No. 4: 3 countries (India, the Philippines, Thailand)
- No. 6: Malaysia
- No. 10: Indonesia
Netflix's article says No. 1 in 87 of the 93. Its downloadable file, for the same week and the same title, says 58. We could not reconcile the two. Netflix's article may use a different basis, or one of the two may contain an error. Until Netflix explains it, the count you can verify yourself is 58.
The countries where GTA VI finished first include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Australia and New Zealand. The 35 where it did not are the interesting part.
Where Vice City lost
The single title that beat GTA VI most often was Facing El Chapo, a non-English film. It finished above An Extended Look in 18 countries, most of them in Latin America: Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela, plus Malaysia, New Caledonia, Nigeria, the Philippines and Thailand.
The Whisper Man beat it in seven countries, most of them in Central and Eastern Europe: Greece, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine, plus Argentina and Uruguay. Alpha, a non-English film, beat it in six countries across South Asia and beyond: Bangladesh, India, the Maldives, Mauritius, Nigeria and Pakistan.
In several large markets, one other film finished first:
- Japan: No. 2, behind Sai: Disaster
- South Korea: No. 2, behind Shelter
- Taiwan: No. 2, behind Sunshine Women's Choir
- Turkey: No. 2, behind Detective Brothers
- Indonesia: No. 10, behind nine other films
Analysis: a chart position reflects what else was on Netflix in that country that week, so a No. 2 in Japan is not a measure of Japanese interest in GTA VI. Viewers everywhere also had the free YouTube upload, which went live six hours after the Netflix premiere, at 9 p.m. Eastern. For a gaming audience that already lives on YouTube, waiting six hours cost nothing.
Week two: Europe kept watching
The country file for the week ending September 6 shows a different map. An Extended Look stayed in the films Top 10 of 54 countries but was No. 1 nowhere. Its best finish was third, in Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal and Slovenia.
It dropped out of the Top 10 entirely in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Japan, South Korea and India. In Western Europe it held on: fourth in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, fifth in Germany and Switzerland, sixth in the United Kingdom and Italy. Of the 54 countries still listing it, 33 are European.
Our reading: the second-week audience looks like a European one. We cannot say why from the data. The Netflix premiere was at 3 p.m. Eastern, which is evening in Europe, and that may have helped in week one. It would not explain a second week.
The free version
The same video is free on Rockstar's YouTube channel. When we checked on October 6, the YouTube upload showed 30,399,755 views. YouTube counts views differently from Netflix, so the two numbers are not comparable, and adding them together would be meaningless.
The YouTube version is also age-restricted. Without signing in, YouTube returns "Sign in to confirm your age." Netflix's head start lasted six hours, but YouTube's age gate never expires. For a viewer without an account, Netflix was the easier place to watch it.
What the numbers prove
They prove that Netflix found a format that tops its chart: a short, enormously anticipated event that collects a lot of views from very few hours. They do not prove that GTA VI outdrew Netflix's films on attention, since it did not on hours, or that it was No. 1 in 87 countries, since Netflix's own file says 58.
The most useful number for anyone planning a launch may be the second week. A 27-minute reveal lost 86 percent of its Netflix audience in seven days and left the chart in three weeks. If Rockstar and Netflix try this again, the bet is a big opening night on Netflix and everything after it on YouTube.
