AMBROSIA IN REAL LIFE

Rockstar's Ambrosia card is titled "Keeping Leonida Sweet" and comes with a tagline that sounds like a campaign slogan: "The battle for the health and wealth of Leonida begins here." The description is blunter: "In the heart of Leonida, American industry and old school values still reign supreme - whatever the cost. The Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides the jobs, while the local biker gang provides almost everything else."

Florida has a real town that calls itself "America's Sweetest Town." It is Clewiston, on the southern shore of Lake Okeechobee, and it grew up around a sugar mill. Rockstar has not named Clewiston, or any real town, as the model for Ambrosia. The parallels are still hard to miss.

How to read these pairs: the first image is an official GTA VI screenshot; the second is a real photograph. A pair shows a shared idea, not a claim that Rockstar copied a specific place or company.

A town built around a mill

Rockstar's first Ambrosia image is "the Ambrosia skyline at night featuring smoke stacks in the distance."

The real sugar towns around Lake Okeechobee look much like that from the road: flat fields, then stacks. Clewiston's mill opened on January 19, 1929. After the original company went bankrupt, it was bought in 1931 and became the United States Sugar Corporation, and the town grew around it. The photo above shows a different mill, at nearby Belle Glade; we could not find a freely licensed photo of the Clewiston mill.

"Allied Crystal" is Rockstar's invention. Fans have compared the name with real Florida sugar companies, but that is a fan reading, and nothing in Rockstar's material points at a real business.

The heart of Leonida

Rockstar places Ambrosia "in the heart of Leonida." Real Florida sugar sits in its geographic heart too. The Everglades Agricultural Area covers about 700,000 acres of drained muck soils south of Lake Okeechobee, and ProPublica reported that the fields there produce more than half of the nation's cane sugar.

The lake is part of the story. The Herbert Hoover Dike, a 143-mile earthen wall around Lake Okeechobee, was built after the 1928 hurricane, which killed about 2,500 people around Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay. A $1.5 billion repair of the dike was completed in January 2023.

Fields on fire

Another official screenshot shows "a field of crops burning at sunset in Ambrosia."

In Florida, growers burn cane fields before harvest to strip the leaves, and each burn needs an authorization from the state's forest service. Residents call the falling ash "black snow." A Palm Beach Post and ProPublica investigation of that name found pollution spikes and more emergency-room visits in Belle Glade during burning season, while the industry and state officials maintain the air is safe. A 2022 Florida State University study estimated about 2.5 deaths a year across South Florida linked to fine particles from cane fires, with a range of 1.2 to 6.1.

That is why "the battle for the health and wealth of Leonida" is such a pointed line. Reading it as a reference to the jobs-versus-air-quality debate is our interpretation, not something Rockstar has said.

The biker gang has no real counterpart

Two of the remaining screenshots show "a motorcycle gang riding together in matching leather vests down a road in Ambrosia" and a biker couple, one of them holding a handgun. Rockstar's line is that the gang "provides almost everything else." This is where the comparison stops: we are not aware of anything linking the real sugar towns to a gang like this, and we will not suggest one.

What is still a fan theory

Fan wikis describe Ambrosia as a rendition of Clewiston, and some add Belle Glade. Rockstar has not named any real town, and fan wikis are not a primary source, so treat those claims as opinion. What Rockstar has confirmed is the name Ambrosia, the Allied Crystal refinery, the biker gang and the scenes described above.

See the Ambrosia wiki page, the Allied Crystal Sugar Refinery and where both sit on the map.
