Our scene-by-scene breakdown lists what Rockstar showed in the GTA VI Launch Trailer. This piece asks what those scenes say about Jason and Lucia's story. Some of it is on screen and confirmed. A good part is our own theory, and we label it that way every time.
Our position up front: the trailer tells a story about Lucia's sentence that doesn't quite add up, and the simplest explanation is that her "sheer luck" came with conditions.
Lucia: out, but still tagged
Early in the trailer, Lucia calls Jason from prison. TechRadar and TheGamer both describe the scene, and on our capture Jason takes the call at the marina.

Later, in a shower scene with Jason, she is wearing an ankle monitor with a red light on it. It is easy to spot in our frame at 0:52, and GamesRadar+ and TechRadar picked up on it too.

Add Trailer 2, where Jason picks her up at the prison gate (as Rolling Stone and PC Gamer described it at the time), and the order looks like this: inside, then out, then out with a tracker. Rockstar's profile of her stays brief: "Fighting for her family landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary. Sheer luck got her out."
Our reading is that Lucia is on some form of supervised release, such as probation or house arrest. Rockstar has not said so, and the monitor could just as easily be a short story beat that disappears after one mission. Her confirmed history is on our Lucia Caminos page and in the entry on her release from Leonida Penitentiary.
Jason: an Army record and no credit
Jason gets more back story than Lucia. In voiceover he says he "got in some trouble in the Army," and later, "They don't give loans... to people like me." The Hollywood Reporter, Kotaku and Dot Esports all quote those lines. At 0:40 he is still wearing a "U.S. Army" T-shirt.

Rockstar's profile says he did "a stint in the Army trying to shake off his troubled teens" and ended up in the Keys "working for local drug runners." The trailer shows what that job looks like day to day. In the opening seconds he is buffing boats at a marina with a sign that reads "Brian's Marina."

Rockstar describes Brian Heder as a Keys drug runner who still moves product through his boat yard, so the sign puts Jason's cleaning job and the smuggling in the same place. More on that is on our pages for Jason Duval, his Army service and Brian Heder.
The loan line is the one we keep coming back to. A man with trouble in his Army past and no credit, who Rockstar says "wants an easy life," is not going to get his money from a bank. Our take: someone else's money is going to have to do.
Theory: the vault is why Lucia went to prison
Around 0:35 two women walk into a round bank vault while cash flies through the air. Going by the silhouette, one of them looks like Lucia. Jason is nowhere in the shot.

From here on we are speculating. Rockstar says fighting for her family put Lucia in prison. A robbery done for family money fits that line at least as well as a fight does. If the vault scene takes place before she meets Jason, it could be the crime that sent her to Leonida Penitentiary. Nothing confirms that. The shot could just as well come from a mission late in the game.
The catch: Florida's 10-20-Life law
Leonida is Rockstar's version of Florida, so it is fair to ask what real Florida does with a crime like this. Under section 775.087 of the Florida Statutes, known as the 10-20-Life law, a person convicted of robbery who "actually possessed a 'firearm'" during the offense gets a minimum of 10 years in prison. The statute adds that "imposition of sentence shall not be suspended, deferred, or withheld."
Two caveats. Leonida is fictional, and the game has no obligation to follow Florida law. We also don't know that Lucia carried a gun, or that she was ever convicted of robbery.
Still, if the vault theory holds and Leonida's courts behave anything like Florida's, she should be looking at a decade inside. Instead, Jason collects her at the gate in Trailer 2, and in the Launch Trailer she is in the shower with a monitor on her ankle.
Our guess: she made a deal
This part is pure speculation. One possibility in our theory is an agreement with prosecutors involving a lesser charge in return for cooperation. "Sheer luck" might be the polite version of a deal Lucia would rather not discuss. If she gave up an accomplice, perhaps the other woman in the vault, that person would have every reason to come after her. The "criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida" in Rockstar's synopsis would then have a personal thread running through it.
Nothing in the trailer proves this. It would, though, explain the monitor, her release and why Lucia's profile is so careful about what she actually did. Rockstar has not confirmed how long she was imprisoned or the chronology of these scenes.
The part that is confirmed
Every frame above comes from the game itself. Rockstar's YouTube description says the Launch Trailer "was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5," so the monitor, the vault and the Army shirt are all things GTA VI is choosing to show us. We will find out which of these theories survive on November 19.
