The most revealing line in GTA VI's age ratings is one that is not there. On Microsoft's store, Grand Theft Auto V for Xbox Series X|S carries the ESRB interactive element "Users Interact", the label for unfiltered contact with other players. GTA VI's US listing does not. Everything else on the American label is the same seven descriptors GTA V has carried for years.
That is the pattern across the ratings that have landed since late September: almost nothing surprising in the content warnings, and a few small absences and wording changes that say more than the headline numbers. We went through the PlayStation Store, the Xbox Store, Microsoft's public product catalog and the rating boards' own definitions on October 6, 2026. This is what the labels say, what each word means, and how far you can read into them.
Where every rating stands on October 6
When Take-Two announced pre-orders on June 24, its release said plainly that "Grand Theft Auto VI is not yet rated". On September 22, GTA Intel reported that Rockstar's own GTA VI page still showed an ESRB Rating Pending badge. Today rockstargames.com/VI shows the Mature badge, and the footer of the An Extended Look page lists the full ESRB descriptors.
Here is the state of play, taken from store listings and Microsoft's catalog for the standard game. The Ultimate Edition listing on Xbox carries identical ratings.
- United States and Canada (ESRB): Mature 17+. Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Interactive element: In-Game Purchases.
- Europe (PEGI): 18. Microsoft lists Drugs, Sex and Violence plus In-Game Purchases. The UK PlayStation Store shows Drugs, Sexual Content, Extreme Violence and Nudity.
- Australia: R18+, with Drug Use, High Impact Violence and Sex Scenes on the Australian Xbox Store.
- New Zealand: R18, with Drug use, Graphic Violence, Sex Scenes and Offensive Language on the New Zealand Xbox Store.
- South Korea (GRAC): 19+ on the Korean PlayStation Store.
- Taiwan: 18+ Restricted, with sex, violence and drugs listed on the Taiwanese PlayStation Store.
- Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates: 21 in both, per the PlayStation Store and Microsoft's catalog.
- Germany (USK): still Rating Pending on the German PlayStation Store and in Microsoft's data.
- Japan (CERO): Rating Pending in Microsoft's data.
- Brazil: split. The Brazilian PlayStation Store says ClassInd rating pending, while the Brazilian Xbox Store already shows 18 with Violência Extrema, Conteúdo Sexual and Drogas Lícitas.
Three large markets, Germany, Japan and, on PlayStation at least, Brazil, have no final rating on the store six weeks before launch. That is not a warning sign by itself. It does mean that anyone telling you what the German or Japanese version cuts is guessing.
The ESRB label: GTA V's seven words, again
Put the US labels side by side and GTA VI matches GTA V exactly on content. Microsoft's catalog entry for GTA V on Xbox Series X|S lists the same seven descriptors. Here is what the ESRB's own guide says each one covers:
- Blood and Gore: "Depictions of blood or the mutilation of body parts."
- Intense Violence: "Graphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict," which may involve "extreme and/or realistic blood, gore, weapons and depictions of human injury and death."
- Mature Humor: "adult" humor, "including sexual references."
- Nudity: "Graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity." The milder tier is Partial Nudity, which GTA VI did not get.
- Strong Language: "Explicit and/or frequent use of profanity."
- Strong Sexual Content: "Explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity." The milder Sexual Content descriptor is for "non-explicit" behavior.
- Use of Drugs and Alcohol: the ESRB defines Use of Drugs as "the consumption or use of illegal drugs" and Use of Alcohol as "the consumption of alcoholic beverages". The milder Drug Reference only covers references and images.
The useful reading is in the tiers. Every descriptor GTA VI received is the stronger of its pair. Rockstar did not end up with Partial Nudity, Sexual Content or Drug Reference. If you expected Rockstar to tone Vice City down for a broader audience, the American label says it did not.
What the ESRB label does not contain matters as well. There is no Simulated Gambling descriptor, which the ESRB says is "typically assigned to simulations of casino-based gambling." There is no In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items). And there is no Users Interact.
The missing "Users Interact" and the online question
On Xbox, GTA V's ESRB entry lists two interactive elements: In-Game Purchases and Users Interact. The ESRB defines Users Interact as "possible exposure to unfiltered/uncensored user-generated content, including user-to-user communications." GTA Online's own Xbox listing carries it too. GTA VI's listing has only In-Game Purchases.
Microsoft's capability tags line up with that. GTA V on Xbox Series X|S is tagged for online multiplayer for 2 to 30 players and online co-op for 2 to 4. GTA VI's listing has three tags: Single player, Optimized for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Live. Take-Two's own pre-order release describes the game as featuring "a single-player experience."
Our reading, not a confirmation: the product rated and listed for November 19 looks like a single-player game. That matches what Rockstar has said so far, which is nothing about an online mode for GTA VI.
The counterpoint is strong, and it is why this is not proof that GTA VI has no online component at launch. GTA Online already exists on Xbox as a separate product with its own rating. A future online mode for VI could be rated and listed the same way, apart from the base game. The GTA+ pre-order bonus, which Take-Two calls "the best way to get the most out of the ever-evolving world of GTA Online", points players at the existing game, not at a new one.
The In-Game Purchases element is also weaker evidence than it looks. The ESRB's definition covers "bonus levels, skins, music, virtual coins and other forms of in-game currency, subscriptions, season passes and upgrades." A paid upgrade from the Standard Edition to the Ultimate Edition already qualifies. The label does not tell you GTA VI has a shark-card-style currency.
PEGI: Gambling and Bad Language drop off
Europe's labels show the clearest change. Microsoft's catalog lists GTA V's PEGI 18 descriptors as Bad Language, Gambling and Violence. GTA VI's are Drugs, Sex and Violence.
The PEGI definitions explain why each change matters, and why one of them does not:
- Sex appears. At PEGI 18, the Sex descriptor means "explicit sexual activity in the game." At PEGI 16 it covers "erotic nudity or sexual intercourse without visible genitals." PEGI also states that nudity in a non-sexual context does not need a descriptor at all.
- Drugs appears. PEGI applies it when a game "refers to or depicts the use of illegal drugs, alcohol or tobacco," and says such games "are always PEGI 16 or PEGI 18."
- Gambling disappears. PEGI gives the Gambling descriptor a PEGI 12 for prominent gambling themes and a PEGI 18 for "simulation of gambling, like games of chance that are normally carried out in casinos." GTA V had it. GTA VI, on Microsoft's list, does not.
- Bad Language disappearing means little. PEGI says that descriptor "can be found on games with a PEGI 12 (mild swearing) or PEGI 16 (strong language)." It is not a PEGI 18 descriptor, so the swearing has not gone anywhere. The ESRB's Strong Language and New Zealand's Offensive Language both confirm it.
Inference: the build PEGI rated did not contain casino-style gambling at a level PEGI chose to flag. Whether Vice City gets casino games later, in this product or another, is a question the label cannot answer.
PEGI's own text adds one more layer. Since June 2026, PEGI attaches text notes for "Paid random items", "Time-limited offers" and "Unrestricted communication", and the last one now means an automatic PEGI 18. None of these notes appear on GTA VI's store listings. Store pages do not always reproduce PEGI's full text, though, so the absence is suggestive and nothing more.
The detailed PEGI wording has been reported without a source we could check. TwistedVoxel reported that PEGI's summary mentions graphic decapitation and dismemberment from certain weapons, and drugs that players can consume from their inventory. When we searched PEGI's public database on October 6, it returned no result for Grand Theft Auto VI. Treat those details as reported, not confirmed.
Australia and New Zealand name "Sex Scenes"
The ANZ labels are where the wording changed most. Australia's R18+ for GTA VI lists Drug Use, High Impact Violence and Sex Scenes. New Zealand's R18 lists Drug use, Graphic Violence, Sex Scenes and Offensive Language.
GTA V, rated R18+ in Australia and R18 in New Zealand, is coded in Microsoft's catalog with a plain "Sex" for Australia and "sexual material" for New Zealand. "Sex Scenes" is narrower and more specific. It describes depicted scenes rather than general sexual material.
That fits the ESRB's Strong Sexual Content and PEGI's Sex at 18. Three separate boards, using three separate vocabularies, all chose their strongest wording on sex. Inference: GTA VI contains depicted sexual scenes that go further than GTA V's. None of the boards say what those scenes are or how often they occur. Neither has Rockstar.
There is a practical side for Australian players. PlayStation's Australian age verification FAQ says that without verification "you won't be able to add Restricted (R 18+) rated games and content from PlayStation Store to your library." It offers a facial scan or an ID document check. With GTA VI now listed as R18+, an Australian PS5 owner who wants to pre-load on November 12 should finish that check first. When we requested the Australian and New Zealand PlayStation Store pages for GTA VI without signing in, the store did not return the product data that other regions did.
The odd ones: Brazil, Germany and Japan
Brazil is the strangest listing. Microsoft shows an 18 with "Drogas Lícitas", which means legal drugs, as the drug descriptor. No other board limits its drug descriptor to legal substances: PEGI's Drugs covers illegal drugs, and the ESRB uses Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Meanwhile Sony's Brazilian store still says the ClassInd rating is pending. One of the two Brazilian listings is out of date or provisional. We would not build any theory on "legal drugs" until ClassInd's final classification appears.
Germany's USK and Japan's CERO are both still pending in the data we checked. For comparison, Microsoft's catalog lists GTA V at USK 18 and at CERO Z, Japan's adults-only tier, with crime and violence descriptors. Expect the same tier for GTA VI. Any claim about specific German or Japanese edits before those ratings appear is speculation.
What a rating label cannot tell you
Rating labels describe categories, not amounts. "Intense Violence" covers a single brutal cutscene and a 60-hour body count equally. A descriptor also reflects the build that was submitted. Content that arrives later, such as an online mode, can be rated separately, as GTA Online was.
The labels also differ by store. The same PEGI 18 appears as three descriptors on Xbox and four on the UK PlayStation Store, because the two stores display PEGI's information differently. When outlets quote "the" GTA VI rating, check which store and which country they mean.
One rating decision is already shaping how people watch the game. Rockstar's YouTube upload of An Extended Look is age-restricted. When we requested it without signing in, YouTube returned "Sign in to confirm your age." The free version of Rockstar's biggest showcase can only be watched by signed-in adults.
The verdict
Read together, the labels say that GTA VI kept every adult content category GTA V had and moved up a step on sex and drugs. Two things disappeared from the rated product: gambling and the online interaction warning. Combined with Microsoft's single-player tag and Take-Two's own "single-player experience" wording, the ratings support one cautious conclusion. What arrives on November 19 is a story game, and whatever Rockstar plans online has not yet been put in front of a ratings board as part of it.
If that reading is wrong, the next place it will show is a new listing with a Users Interact line.
