Can You Switch Between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6?
Yes, but not at every moment. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told Famitsu that some missions let you switch between Jason and Lucia freely, some switch for you and some lock you to one of them. Outside missions, Dazed's preview describes playing as a couple or going off alone. The switching controls have not been announced.

Can you play as both Jason and Lucia?
Yes. Both are playable, and Rockstar's own material treats the game as "Jason and Lucia's story." In the Extended Look gameplay video from August 27, 2026, you see both of them under player control, and Shacknews described a quick switch in which the camera pulls out to a map-style view and drops into the other character's location.
The current PlayStation Store listing says "1 player" for the story experience. No co-op mode for Jason and Lucia has been announced.
[1][5][9]How does switching work in missions?
This is the part Rockstar has explained. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, told the Japanese magazine Famitsu (in PC Gamer's report of the GamesRadar+ translation):
"During the story, there are times where you can't switch from one character for some reason. There are some missions where you are free to switch as much as you want, but there are some sections where we want you to experience it from a certain character's perspective, like GTA 5, so we limit switching."
He gave three examples:
- A locked mission. An early mission used to let you swap freely, but the team decided Jason should lead it because of his Army background, so it now stays with him.
- An automatic switch. In the getaway shown in the Extended Look, you shoot at the police as Jason from the back seat, and the game then puts you behind the wheel as Lucia.
- A free mission. The attack on the building at the end of the Extended Look lets you swap between them as you like, Nelson said, although the video does not show it.
Can you switch freely in the open world?Unconfirmed
Dazed describes switching in an open-world example, but Rockstar has not published a general rule about when switching is available. Dazed, which interviewed Rockstar for its Autumn 2026 cover story, says you can "choose to either play as a couple, or go off and cause chaos independently." It describes driving down the highway as Jason, then switching to Lucia in the passenger seat to scroll through the in-game phone.
Splitting up also matters to the police. Nelson told IGN that the police know when Jason and Lucia are together, and that splitting up "will also help lower the police's perception of you." Our GTA 6 wanted system guide covers how that works.

[3][6][5][4][1][9][2]How did switching work in GTA 5? (precedent, not confirmation)
This section describes GTA 5, not GTA 6. It is here because Nelson compared the two himself.
In GTA 5 you could switch between Michael, Franklin and Trevor at almost any time outside missions using a compass on screen, although the story blocked it at certain points. During missions, the game often switched for you so each character could handle his part of the job.
Nelson's words suggest GTA 6 keeps the idea of limiting switches for the story's sake, "like GTA 5." That is as far as the comparison goes. Rockstar has not said that GTA 6 uses the same compass, the same rules outside missions, or the same automatic switches. We will update this page from the released game after November 19, 2026.
