GTA 6 File Size: What the Stores Say So Far

How big is GTA 6?

Nobody outside Rockstar knows yet. We checked the three places where an official size would show up first on October 19, 2026, and none of them lists one:

None of these pages gives storage requirements either. Console stores usually add a size once the download itself exists, which is why the pre-load date matters: it is the first moment the stores have a real file to measure.

What is confirmed and what is not?

The disc point is the one people miss. Rockstar says physical versions "will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box." So whichever edition you buy, digital or boxed, the whole game comes down over your internet connection and needs room on your console.

If you are searching for a GTA 6 PC file size, there is nothing to measure: Rockstar lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Our page on GTA 6 PC requirements explains why any spec sheet you see is a guess.

Where do the 150 GB to 300 GB numbers come from?Unconfirmed

They come from fans, not from Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft. IBTimes UK went through Reddit threads in September and found guesses of 184, 218, 250 and 300 GB, among others, and described the 150 to 300 GB range as "fan expectations, not an official specification". A screenshot claiming "244.86 GB required" also did the rounds; IBTimes UK could not verify it, and the store pages do not show it.

The scariest number, 676.7 GB, was a joke. Insider Gaming traced the image to a parody account whose bio says its stories are fake. It even told players to install the game on an Xbox One, a console GTA VI is not coming to.

For a sense of scale only, here is what earlier Rockstar console games needed. These numbers do not predict GTA VI.

How much free space should you keep for GTA 6?

No source tells you a number for GTA VI, and we are not going to invent one. What Sony and Microsoft do document is where the game can live:

• PS5: check free space under Settings > Storage. PS5 games can be played from console storage or from a compatible M.2 SSD in the expansion slot. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games but cannot run them; they have to be moved back first.
• Xbox Series X|S: games optimized for Series X|S run from the internal SSD or the Storage Expansion Card, which Microsoft says matches the internal drive's performance. A USB 3.1 drive can store them but not play them.

The practical move is to clear space before November 12 rather than on the night. Move finished games to a USB drive (you can copy them back later), delete what you no longer play, and remember that GTA VI is listed as optimized for Series X|S, so on Xbox it needs to sit on the internal drive or an expansion card. Step-by-step instructions for both consoles are in our GTA 6 pre-load guide.

Is there a GTA 6 download before release?

No. Before November 19 the only legitimate way to get GTA VI onto a console is the pre-load from the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Store, which starts on November 12 and stays locked until launch. Any "GTA 6 download", torrent, ISO, APK or "PC beta" offered before then is fake.

These files are not harmless. In September, Help Net Security reported on an analysis by the security firm Huntress of a fake GTA 6 download packaged as a disc image. The "installer" showed an error message while it quietly installed remote access tools, a password stealer that went after Discord and browser logins, and ransomware that wrecked files. There is no mobile version of GTA VI either, so any GTA 6 APK is a scam by definition.

If a site asks you to download an installer, enter your console account details or "verify" with a survey to get the game early, close it.

When will the GTA 6 file size be announced?Unconfirmed

Expect a real figure on or just before November 12, when pre-load opens and the stores attach the download. Earlier Rockstar releases followed that pattern: the size of the GTA V PS5 version surfaced with its pre-load, not weeks ahead.

We will check the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store again when pre-load opens and update this page with the size each store lists, including any difference between Xbox Series X and Series S. Until then, keep an eye on our release date page for the launch schedule, read what each edition includes (both editions are the same game download; the Ultimate Edition adds in-game items), and use the launch day checklist to plan the week.
