GTA 6 Pre-Load: Date, File Size and How to Pre-Load on PS5 and Xbox
GTA VI pre-load opens on November 12, 2026, one week before launch. Rockstar has not published a file size yet. Here is how pre-loading works on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, where the game can be installed, and what is still unconfirmed.

When pre-load opens
The Rockstar Store says "Pre-load begins November 12, 2026", exactly one week before the November 19 release. On the PlayStation Store, both the Standard and Ultimate Editions list "7-Day Pre-load" among their features. The physical box exists partly for the same reason: it contains a download code "to support pre-load on November 12".
Pre-loading only downloads the game. It stays locked until release, which is covered in our release time guide.
Last checked: October 7, 2026.
[2][3]What time pre-load startsUnconfirmed
This is less settled than it looks. GTABase, writing on September 23, says Rockstar's support page states that pre-loading begins at local midnight on November 12 for anyone with a digital pre-order. GTA Intel, on September 11, read Rockstar's pre-order announcement as giving a date only. The Rockstar Store page we checked on October 7 gives a date and no hour, and we could not load Rockstar Support that day to confirm the quote.
For comparison, Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-loads opened at 12 a.m. Eastern on October 19, 2018, according to Inverse. Until Rockstar repeats an hour on a page we can check, treat any exact start time for GTA VI pre-load as unconfirmed.
[2][13][14][11]Who can pre-load
Anyone with a digital pre-order of either edition on the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Store can pre-load, and so can buyers of the physical code-in-box version once the code has been redeemed. The Rockstar Store sells both digital and code-in-box copies and points to the same November 12 date.
[2][3][4]File size: not published yet
As of October 7, 2026, Rockstar has not announced a download or install size for GTA VI, and neither the US PlayStation Store page nor the Xbox Store listing shows one. Figures circulating on social media are not from Rockstar or the stores.
For context only, here is what earlier Rockstar console releases needed. These numbers do not predict GTA VI's size.
| Game | Platform | Size | Source | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | PS4 | 99 GB | Inverse | | Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | Xbox One | 107 GB | Inverse | | Grand Theft Auto V (2022 release) | PS5 | 86.837 GB download, version 01.001.000 | MP1st, via the PlayStation Game Size account |
We will add GTA VI's size here as soon as a listing or Rockstar publishes it.
[2][3][4][11][12]How to pre-load on PS5
These steps follow PlayStation's own help page for pre-orders and automatic downloads.
- Pre-order GTA VI on the PlayStation Store, or redeem your code-in-box code there. PlayStation says you are charged when you select Pre-order.
- Turn on automatic downloads in your console settings.
- Go to your games home, select Game Library, then select GTA VI. A timer counting down to release appears.
- Select the timer. A list of the content included with your pre-order appears. Leave the checkbox ticked for everything you want downloaded automatically, then select OK.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet in the rest mode settings so the download can run while the console is in rest mode.
From November 12, check Game Library to make sure the download has started and finished before launch night.
[5]How to pre-load on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox describes the feature in one line: "Pre-install your pre-ordered games, remote install games while away from your console, and turn on auto-update so your games are waiting for you."
- Pre-order GTA VI on the Xbox Store, or redeem your code-in-box code to your Microsoft account.
- When pre-install opens on November 12, install the game from its store page or from your library on the console.
- Away from home, you can start the install remotely from the Xbox mobile app or Xbox.com.
- Keep automatic updates on, so any update released for launch is downloaded too.
The Xbox listing marks GTA VI as "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S", which matters for where you can install it (see below).
[8][4]PS5 storage: internal, M.2 and USB
PlayStation's help pages are clear on where a PS5 game can live:
- USB extended storage can hold PS5 games but cannot run them. PlayStation says PS5 games "can't be played directly from USB extended storage" and must be copied back first. Drives need 250 GB to 8 TB capacity and SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster.
- An M.2 SSD in the expansion slot behaves like internal storage. PS5 games can be played, downloaded directly and updated there. PlayStation lists a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe drive of 250 GB to 8 TB, a recommended sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, and a cooling structure such as a heatsink. Update your console's system software before installing one.
A practical move before November 12: copy finished PS5 games to a USB drive to free internal space. You can copy them back later from Game Library.
[6][7]Xbox storage: internal, expansion card and USB
In Xbox Wire's storage guide, USB 3.1 external drives can store any Xbox game but cannot play games optimized for Xbox Series X|S. Microsoft says the Storage Expansion Card plugs into the port on the back and delivers "the exact same consistent, sustained, gameplay performance of our internal SSD".
Since GTA VI is listed as optimized for Xbox Series X|S, plan to run it from the internal SSD or an expansion card. Seagate, which makes the card, confirms Series X|S optimized games play directly from it, while USB drives only hold them until you move them back.
[9][10][4]Day-one patch: not announcedUnconfirmed
Rockstar has not announced a day-one patch, a launch update or its size. A pre-loaded game can still need an update when it unlocks, so keep some free space beyond the game itself and leave automatic updates on. If Rockstar publishes patch notes or a size, we will add them here and mark them confirmed.
[1][2]Pre-loading and refunds
Starting a download can change your refund options. PlayStation's help page says you can cancel a pre-order before release for a full refund. Once the game is out, a refund within 14 days of making the pre-order is only possible if the content has not started to download, and pre-loading counts as downloading. Check your store's rules before you pre-load if you are unsure about keeping the order. Our pre-order guide covers cancellation on each store.
