GTA 6 Weather System: Hurricanes, Storms and Wind Explained

Yes, GTA 6 has hurricanes. Rockstar told Game Informer that Leonida gets tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes, and that its weather is local and persistent: rain can fall on one district while another stays sunny, and puddles remain after a storm passes. How often hurricanes hit, and what they do to missions, is not announced.

Does GTA 6 have hurricanes?

Yes. In Game Informer's GTA VI cover story, published on September 29, 2026, Rockstar confirmed that Leonida has "tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes" alongside its sunny days. Game Informer says the system is designed to simulate the tropical climate of real-life Florida.

This is an official preview, not a rumor. Game Informer's Marcus Stewart wrote that he "spoke with several lead designers at Rockstar Games" for the feature, and the free online write-up says Rockstar "details the game's advanced weather systems" in it. Rockstar has not repeated the weather details on its own Newswire, so Game Informer is the primary source for everything on this page.

What the cover story does not do is show a hurricane in motion or explain what one does to the game. Game Informer says so directly: "we don't know how often these larger, more violent storms occur or how they affect gameplay and storytelling."

What has Rockstar confirmed about GTA 6 weather?

Everything below comes from Rockstar via Game Informer. Quotes from Rockstar's Owen Shepherd were published by Game Informer and repeated by Dexerto and GTA Intel; we could not read the paywalled magazine text ourselves.

FeatureWhat Rockstar describedStatus
Tropical storms and hurricanesSeasonal hurricanes and tropical storms in LeonidaConfirmed
Local weatherYou can stand in a dry, sunny area and watch it pour somewhere in the distanceConfirmed
Lasting wetnessPuddles and wet surfaces stay after a storm moves onConfirmed

RainbowsCan appear after a fresh shower under the right lightingConfirmed
Storm effectsHeavy clouds, strong winds, dense rain, thunder and lightning, water running off roof edges and lamppostsConfirmed (Shepherd, quoted)
WindOffshore breezes after sunset, rising warm air, buildings blocking the windConfirmed (Shepherd, quoted)

How does the new weather system work?

The key word from Rockstar is local. Owen Shepherd, Rockstar's vice president of art for lighting and rendering, told Game Informer: "We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent."

In practice that means weather belongs to a place, not to the whole map at once. A storm can sit over one part of Vice City while the next neighbourhood stays bright, and if you drive into the area after the clouds have moved on, the ground is still wet. Game Informer's write-up describes exactly that: you can "spot storms in the distance where it is actually pouring down" and later tell "it just rained thanks to persistent puddles and other wet surfaces."

When the big systems arrive, Shepherd describes "heavy clouds, strong winds, dense atmospherics, and a lot of rain" combining "so that everything is dripping wet," with thunder and lightning lighting up the clouds. Those are descriptions of how a storm looks and sounds. None of the quotes talks about damage, flooding or changed driving.

What does wind do in GTA 6?

Wind gets its own simulation. According to Shepherd, it accounts for offshore breezes after sunset, convectional updrafts and occlusion from buildings, which in principle means a street between towers and an open beach should not feel the same.

The visible results he lists are small but specific: "Hair and debris will swirl around on roof-tops; gusts of wind will blow ripples over the water surface" and bend the grass in the swamps. That last detail matters for places like Grassrivers, the wetland Rockstar built around mangroves and open water.

What has Rockstar not announced about hurricanes?

Most of the questions people ask about GTA 6 hurricanes have no official answer yet. As of October 19, 2026:

QuestionStatus
How often do hurricanes happen? Not announced
Do storms affect missions or the story? Not announced
Do hurricanes flood streets or damage buildings? Not announced
Does rain change how cars handle? Not announced
Is there a forecast, warning or weather app on the phone? Not announced
Can you trigger or change the weather? Not announced

Dexerto points out that older Rockstar job listings mentioned large-scale destruction, but a job advert is not a feature announcement, and nothing ties it to hurricanes. We also leave out anything based on leaked footage. If Rockstar shows a hurricane before launch, or the game confirms it on November 19, this table will change.

Why do hurricanes fit Leonida?

Leonida is Rockstar's take on Florida, and storms are part of life there. The US National Hurricane Center says the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, peaks around September 10, and sees most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Over the 1991 to 2020 period, an average season produced 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes.

That is the climate Game Informer says Rockstar set out to simulate. Whether Leonida follows a real calendar, with a stormier late summer, is one more thing Rockstar has not said. GTA 6 itself launches on November 19, 2026, right at the tail end of the real season. For the regions themselves, see our GTA 6 map guide; for the real places behind them, see Grassrivers in real life and the Leonida Keys.

Is "Hurricane Roxy" or "Flower in a Hurricane" about the weather?

No. Two other GTA 6 names use the word and often show up in the same searches:

For what else is known about the state these storms hit, start with Leonida, the interactive GTA 6 map and the GTA 6 release date page.
