How Long Is GTA 6? The 80-Hour Playthrough Explained
The only length figure from Rockstar is one developer's run. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told The New York Times his playthrough took about 80 hours, covering the main story and some optional goals. Rockstar has not published an official main-story or 100% time.

The short answer
Expect GTA VI to be a long game, but there is no official number yet. The only figure from Rockstar comes from Rob Nelson, who runs Rockstar North with Aaron Garbut. He told New York Times critic Christopher Byrd that his own play-through, done in February, took about 80 hours. In the Times' words, it "included the main story and some optional goals with narrative ramifications."
That is one developer's run, not a published estimate. Rockstar has not said how quickly Nelson played or how much he skipped.
[1][2]What the 80 hours does and does not cover
The Times names two things: the main story, and some optional goals that change how the story plays out. It does not say how many, and it does not describe a 100% run. Collectibles and every side activity are not part of the description, so 80 hours is neither a story-only time nor a completionist time.
It is also a pre-release run. Nelson played in February 2026, nine months before the game's November 19 release.
[1][2][8]Where the figure comes from
The quote is from "The Grand Ambitions of 'Grand Theft Auto VI'", published by The New York Times on August 27, 2026, the day Rockstar released the Extended Look gameplay video. Byrd watched Nelson play during a hands-off session at Rockstar North in Edinburgh.
TechSpot and others picked up the number the same day. Some headlines turned it into "up to 80 hours to beat", as TechRadar put it, which says more than the original does. Nelson described one run that mixed story and side content, nothing more.
[1][2][3][4]For comparison: GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2
HowLongToBeat collects completion times from players. These are its averages, checked October 14, 2026. They are not Rockstar figures.
| Game | Main story | Main + sides | Completionist | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Grand Theft Auto V | 32 hours | 51.5 hours | 89.5 hours | | Red Dead Redemption 2 | 51 hours | 84.5 hours | 195 hours |
Nelson's run mixed story and optional content, so the middle column is the nearest match. Still, it is one person's run set against averages from thousands of players, so treat the comparison loosely.
[5][6]What Rockstar has said about scale
The Times article gives some context from Rockstar itself. Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos in GTA V, and the whole map is three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Nelson also made clear he does not want people to rush. Describing the daily routines in the game, he said: "I hope that there will be people that want to get up, have a cup of coffee, shower, get dressed, go out for a little exercise."
The story is split into chapters. The store listings say the Ultimate Edition's items are "uncovered behind each chapter", so on that edition some extras arrive only as you progress. Our editions guide lists them.
[1][2][7]What about 100% completion?
There is no official figure. Rockstar has not published a completion checklist, a collectible count or a trophy list we could check. We will add real numbers from the released game after November 19. They will appear in our collectibles and trophies guides, and the before you play guide covers what to sort out first.
