Port Gellhorn and Florida’s Forgotten Coast: What Matches?
Rockstar calls Port Gellhorn “Leonida’s forgotten coast,” wording shared with a real stretch of Florida’s Gulf coast. Panama City Beach is another common comparison, but Rockstar has named no real-world model. Here are the official details and the limits of each proposed match.

What does Rockstar say about Port Gellhorn?
Everything in this section comes from Rockstar's own Port Gellhorn page, checked on October 20, 2026. The tagline is Live Hard, the subtitle is "This is Leonida's forgotten coast", and the description reads:
"Cheap motels, shut-down attractions, and empty strip malls won't bring the tourists back, but there's a new economy in this once-popular vacation spot. It's fueled by malt liquor, painkillers, and truck stop energy drinks. Jump on a dirt bike and hold onto your wallet."
Rockstar's image captions for the area describe a motel with its vacancy sign lit at night, two men in a room full of grow lights (one leaning on a shovel, one holding a baseball bat), a woman passing a package through a car window, a cabaret car park after dark and a bonfire party beside a truck.
That is the whole official record. Rockstar gives no map position, no population and no real-world model. For the place itself, including how it fits the story, see our Port Gellhorn wiki entry. This page only deals with the real-life comparison.
[1][2]Which real places is Port Gellhorn compared to?Unconfirmed
None of these is confirmed. Rockstar does not say which real towns it studied, so each row is fan analysis, and the confidence column is our own judgement of how well the official text and images support it.
| Real place | Why people compare it | Our confidence |
|---|---|---|
| Florida's Forgotten Coast (Gulf, Franklin and Wakulla counties) | Rockstar's subtitle uses the same name | High for the name, low for the look |
| Panama City Beach | A former spring-break capital with a demolished amusement park | Medium |
| Mexico Beach and the Hurricane Michael coast | Fan wikis match the motel to storm-hit buildings there | Low |
| Tampa Bay and the Sunshine Skyway | Appears in some fan maps | Low |
| Fort Myers | Named by Sportskeeda as one guess | Low |
Dexerto's real-life guide says the signs point to Panama City but admits the town is hard to pin down. The official description may draw on several coastal settings, but Rockstar has not identified its sources.
[8][9][10][3]What does “forgotten coast” suggest?Unconfirmed
The phrase also names a real Florida region, although Rockstar has not said it borrowed the name. The Forgotten Coast is the stretch of the Florida Panhandle running roughly from Mexico Beach on the Gulf to St. Marks on Apalachee Bay, taking in Port St. Joe, Apalachicola, Eastpoint and Carrabelle. The Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce started using the trademarked name in 1992.
There is a twist. The real Forgotten Coast markets itself as the part of Florida that never got the high-rises and strip malls. Rockstar's version is built from exactly those things: cheap motels, closed attractions and empty shopping strips. The shared wording supports a comparison with the Panhandle. The contrasting resort imagery makes a one-to-one match less convincing.
[1][3]Is Port Gellhorn based on Panama City Beach?Unconfirmed
It is a recurring press and fan comparison, and parts of the description resemble a faded resort town. Panama City Beach, in Bay County on the Panhandle, built its fame on spring break and roadside attractions.
Two real details line up with Rockstar's text:
- "Shut-down attractions." The Miracle Strip Amusement Park opened in Panama City Beach in 1963 and closed in September 2004. Its coaster and carousel were sold off and the remaining buildings were demolished by 2010.
- "Won't bring the tourists back." After a violent 2015 spring break, the Panama City Beach council voted to ban drinking on the beach in March.
What does not line up: none of Rockstar's Port Gellhorn captions mentions a beach, a pier or the sea. They are all motels, car parks, a grow room and a bonfire. A coastal town that Rockstar never shows from the water is still a coastal town, but the Panama City Beach match rests on mood more than on any one building. Medium confidence.
[4][5][8][1]What is the "new economy" in Port Gellhorn?Unconfirmed
Rockstar names three fuels for Port Gellhorn's economy: malt liquor, painkillers and truck stop energy drinks. The painkiller line has a real Florida history behind it. A 2014 CDC report found that in 2010, 98 of the 100 US doctors who dispensed the most oxycodone from their own offices were in Florida, before state laws in 2010 and 2011 shut down roughly 250 pain clinics.
That crisis was statewide, not specific to the Panhandle, so it does not point to one town. It does explain why Rockstar would pick painkillers as shorthand for a down-at-heel Florida resort. This is our reading of the copy, not something Rockstar has said.
[1][6]Is Port Gellhorn a nod to Hurricane Michael?Unconfirmed
Hurricane Michael struck the Florida Panhandle in 2018, but Rockstar has not linked the storm to Port Gellhorn. Some fan comparisons connect the game’s motel image with storm-damaged buildings. The resemblance is too weak to identify a specific building or to infer storm damage in the game.
[7][10][2]Where does the name Port Gellhorn come from?Unconfirmed
Rockstar has not explained the name. A connection to Martha Gellhorn or to Port St. Joe has been suggested by fans, but the official material offers no evidence for either etymology. Treat both as unsupported theories, not as clues to Port Gellhorn’s location.
[11][3]What would settle the comparison?
Rockstar has not said where Port Gellhorn sits on the map, how big it is, or whether it is on the Gulf side of Leonida at all. If the finished game puts it on a western coast with a port and an old amusement strip, the Panhandle reading gets much stronger. If it turns out to sit near Vice City, most of the comparisons on this page fall away.
We do not use maps or names from leaked development footage, which is where several online claims about Port Gellhorn's layout come from.
For the rest of the state, start with our GTA 6 map guide. The other real-life comparisons are Vice City and Miami, the Leonida Keys and the Florida Keys, Grassrivers and the Everglades and Ambrosia and Florida's sugar country. Every place Rockstar has named is pinned on the interactive map.
