GTA 6 Storage Guide: Free Space, PS5 SSDs, USB Drives and Xbox Expansion Cards
To play GTA 6 on PS5 it must sit on the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 SSD; on Xbox Series X|S, on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. USB drives can store it but cannot run it on either console. How much space you need is unknown: no store lists a GTA 6 file size as of October 20, 2026.

How much free space do you need for GTA 6?
Nobody can give you a real number yet. On October 20, 2026 the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings for GTA VI showed no download or install size, and the Microsoft Store catalog record had no download package attached. Every figure you see online is a guess. Our live GTA 6 file size page tracks the estimates and will carry the official size as soon as a store lists it, most likely when pre-load opens on November 12.
What is certain: the boxed version contains only a download code, so everyone downloads the full game, whichever version they buy. Rockstar has not announced a day-one patch either, so leave room beyond the game itself.
The practical plan is to free space you can get back easily, so you are not stuck deleting things on launch night.
[1][2][3][4]Where can GTA 6 be stored on PS5?
Sony's support pages give three places, and only two of them can run a PS5 game:
| Storage | Can it hold GTA 6? | Can you play from it? |
|---|---|---|
| Internal console SSD | Yes | Yes |
| M.2 SSD in the expansion slot | Yes | Yes |
| USB extended storage | Yes | No, copy it back first |
Check your free space under Settings > Storage. GTA VI is a PS5 game (the PlayStation Store lists it for PS5 and marks it PS5 Pro Enhanced), so the PS4 rule that lets games run from USB does not apply.
[5][6][7][1]Which M.2 SSD works for GTA 6 on PS5?
There is no "GTA 6 SSD". Choose a drive that meets Sony's requirements, while noting that Sony does not guarantee compatibility for every qualifying model:
| Requirement | Sony's spec |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (M key) |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Read speed | 5,500 MB/s sequential read or faster, recommended |
| Sizes | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 |
| Size with cooling | Up to 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick |
| Cooling | Heatsink or heat transfer sheet required |
Sony adds a few warnings worth reading before you buy: it cannot guarantee every drive that meets the spec will work, heatsink sizes vary a lot, and some games may not run exactly as fast as on the internal SSD. Update the console's system software before fitting the drive, and expect to format it the first time, which erases it.
We do not recommend a brand or model, and this page carries no shop links. Until the GTA VI size is known, base the capacity on how full your console already is, not on a guess about the game.
[7]Can you play GTA 6 from a USB drive?
No, on either console. A USB drive is still useful as a parking space:
- PS5: USB extended storage needs SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster and 250 GB to 8 TB of capacity, connected directly, not through a hub, one drive at a time. Move finished PS5 games there from Game Library with Move Games and Apps, then copy them back when you want to play.
- Xbox: a USB 3.1 drive can store any Xbox game and play Xbox One and older games, but cannot play games optimized for Series X|S. GTA VI's Xbox listing says "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S".
Copying a game back from a USB drive is usually faster than downloading it again.
[6][8][2]Which Xbox storage expansion card works with GTA 6?
On Xbox Series X and Series S, games optimized for those consoles run from the internal SSD or from a Storage Expansion Card in the port on the back. Microsoft says the card gives the same performance as the internal drive, and the same card works in both consoles. Seagate, which made the first card with Microsoft, now lists 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB versions.
A regular external SSD on USB does not count. It can hold GTA VI between sessions, but the game has to sit on the internal drive or the card to run.
[8][9][2]What should you do before pre-load on November 12?
- Check free space now: Settings > Storage on PS5, and the storage section of Settings on Xbox.
- Move finished games you might return to onto a USB drive. You can copy them back later.
- Delete games you will not go back to, and clear old capture clips.
- If you plan to add an M.2 SSD or an expansion card, do it before November 12, so the pre-load can go straight there.
- Turn on automatic downloads, so the game and any launch update arrive without you.
Step-by-step pre-load instructions for both consoles are in our GTA 6 pre-load guide, and the rest of the week is in the GTA 6 launch day checklist. The GTA 6 release date page has the launch schedule.
